Who says I glitter like a Christmas tree?
By Wong Kim Hoh
SOME of her friends and business contacts jokingly refer to Mrs Rosalind Foong-Lim as 'Bling Central'.
She does dazzle. There are gems on her fingers, her wrists and her neck. Why, even her signature spectacles - she has many pairs - are bejewelled.
It's to be expected. After all, she is the general manager of TianPo Jewellery, which started in the 1970s as a jewellery department in Mrs Foong-Lim's family business, Lim's Arts & Crafts in Holland Village.
She became its general manager in the 1980s and under her direction, it expanded. Today, there are nine TianPo outlets in Singapore.
Naturally, she waxes lyrical over all metal and stones precious.
Can a woman ever have enough jewellery?
'It's never enough. How can you ever have enough beauty? There are so many to choose from - diamonds, coloured stones, gold, silver. There are so many designs.'
She added: 'And as you mature, your perspective changes and your style and taste may change too. It's a moving target, it's never enough.'
The bubbly 45-year-old, who has an 18-year-old daughter and a 15-year-old son, loves 'buying and selling'.
Besides TianPo, she also runs two optical shops and has a hand in the family business, which includes Cafe 211 and Lim's Arts & Living in Holland Village.
She is also chairman of this month's Singapore JewelFest 2004, the only consumer jewellery festival in Asia, with a total of 31 international and local participating couture and chain jewellers.
Q : To begin, are diamonds forever?
A : Definitely. Tell me, what else lasts forever? Relationships? Mortality? Youth? Till death do us part? Endless love exists only in a song.
A rock, however, will stay with you even if there's a change of heart. You can pass it on to your other loved ones.
Q : If diamonds are a girl's best friend, are they, by extension, a man's worst enemy?
A : No. Man's worst enemies are, one, his conscience, if he has any; two, his ego, which needs constant nurturing; and three, his will power, to stay away from what he cannot have.
Q : Seriously, should every woman own some good bling bling? Why?
A : Why not? Every woman should indulge in diamonds and fine gems. After all, they are God's gifts to women from nature. So women should appreciate their beauty and enjoy them as they do God's other gift to women - man.
However, the latter is one you cannot live without and yet will be better off not to live with. A real twister of the mind here.
Q : Can you tell us why Ah Bengs want to risk hernia wearing gold chains that weigh several kilos?
A : They are the same as women. When you have it, why not flaunt it? Many Ah Bengs have arrived and have lots of hard cash to spend.
Gold is not only an investment which grabs the attention, but also a liquid asset anytime. That's a lesson worth learning.
Q : How many pairs of glasses do you have? And is every pair studded with jewels and precious stones? And why glasses when there is Lasik surgery?
A : I've lost count. In essence, it's 'two shopfuls', as I am also co-owner of Eyelink, which has optical retail shops in West Mall and Holland Village.
Eyewear has become an expression of one's style and personality. It's about accessorising and looking confident. No Lasik for me. I have a business interest here, I have to promote wearing glasses to stay in business.
Bejewelled eyewear is the ultimate and it is also my weakness. I have an image to keep up and it has to complement my other passion, which is jewellery.
But I don't wear these all the time. They can be too over-the-top at times, so I have some simple classic ones for normal days.
Q : Can precious stones really help you strike 4-D, ward off vampires and reel in that man?
A : Well, if it works for them, it works for me. The power of belief transcends logic and reasoning. Historically, man wore jewellery for both beauty and protection. It all began with amulets for protection and symbols of power to gain command.
Q : If you only had one gem you could own, which would it be? Please give details of cut, size and price.
A : At this point in time, it would be a five-carat Hearts On Fire diamond, the world's most perfectly cut diamond. A D-Flawless round brilliant diamond and priceless! It's very rare and will cost at least half a million dollars. How about that - wearing an apartment on your finger?
Q : Only pimps, drug lords and metrosexual footballers with way too much moolah wear diamonds. How would you mount a campaign to dispel that perception?
A : Personality profiling with products has proven to be a successful strategy. So I will line up the CEOs and founders of Forbes or Fortune A-list companies.
World leaders will be great spokesmen, if I can ever get them. Beautiful celebrities always work. You just have to showcase more of the right personalities to overcome the negative stereotypes.
Q : Why are most jewellery businesses in Singapore family-owned and run?
A : Mainly, it's the high capital investment required for the jewellery business. You need a close-knit operation and trust is fundamental. The stakeholders also have to monitor very closely the high-value inventory. Families are more ideal for this sort of operation.
Q : Give three tips on spotting fake stones on socialites at glitzy social events.
A : One, look at the size of the gem. Some are just too big to be real.
Two, look out for flaws. If it's too perfect, it's probably questionable. Natural gems always have flaws; it's the degree of the flaws that determines the true beauty of the gem and makes it unique and one of a kind.
Three, look at the design and style of the jewellery. If it's lousy, you should be suspicious. Beautiful gems must be set with fine craftsmanship and an excellent design.n
Fantastic!so how abt it?anyone wants to get a diamond for moi?hehehe....
